About The Program
Service-Learning (S-L) is a pedagogy and formative experience integrated into professional courses and grounded in the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP).
As a ministry of social formation, it connects academic learning and professional competencies with meaningful community engagement, critical reflection, and action.
Through Service-Learning, students apply course-based knowledge and professional skills to real-world concerns identified with partner communities and institutions. Service-Learning intentionally integrates learning and service: students work toward achieving course learning outcomes and professional formation while contributing to service outcomes that respond to priorities identified with community partners.
Engagement is founded on reciprocity. Community partners are recognized as co-formators, co-educators, and co-creators of the learning and service experience. Students and community partners learn from and contribute to one another through collaboration that respects the communities’ knowledge, values, strengths, agency, and expressed needs.
Completion of NSTP 2 is a prerequisite for Service-Learning integration because the foundational knowledge, skills, and formation gained through NSTP 2 are further applied and strengthened in planning, implementing, and reflecting on Service-Learning actions.
For students enrolled in four-year degree programs, Service-Learning is integrated into a professional course during the third year or the first semester of the fourth year. For students enrolled in five-year degree programs, it may be integrated during the fourth year or the first semester of the fifth year.
Through this formative experience, students examine social realities, recognize their responsibilities as future professionals, and deepen their commitment to solidarity and a faith that does justice.
