Leadership Formation

Leadership, The Ateneo Way

At Ateneo de Davao University, leadership is not a title to be held, but a mission to be lived. Leadership Formation is our intentional, holistic process of nurturing student-leaders who are competent, compassionate, and deeply committed to the common good.

Rooted in the Ignatian tradition of discernment and cura personalis (care for the whole person), our formation programs challenge students to look beyond personal ambition. We form leaders Sui Generis—leaders “of their own kind”—who are uniquely prepared to engage with the socio-political realities of Mindanao, advocate for the marginalized, and bridge cultural and religious divides. Through reflective practice, ethical decision-making, and community engagement, we transform student potential into purposeful, Christ-centered service.

The Summit: Putting Formation into Action

The Core Pillars of Our Leadership Framework

Our leadership formation program doesn’t stop when the summit ends. We frame our leadership journey around four distinct pillars that empower our Blue Knights to make a tangible impact:

  • Ignatian Leadership: Rooted in reflection, intentionality, and discernment, teaching student-leaders to look inward before leading outward.
  • The Shared Common Good: Focusing organizational goals away from personal accolades and toward collective progress.
  • Social Responsiveness: Deeply understanding the distinct cultural and historical context of Mindanao, including the Lumad and Bangsamoro communities.
  • Cura Personalis (Care for the Whole Person): Honoring the uniqueness of every individual’s call to service.

The Leadership Journey: 4-Phase Roadmap

The Blue Knight Leadership Summit marks the launch of a year-long leadership development track. Rather than a standalone seminar, our formation follows a progressive roadmap:

  1. Phase 1: Orientation & Discovery (The Summit Launch) Delegates engage in self-assessment, team-building exercises, and interactive couch sessions with former student leaders to discover their true calling.
  2. Phase 2: Core Mentorship (Mid-Year Development) Student leaders are paired with experienced faculty advisors and community partners to refine their strategic execution and organizational management skills.
  3. Phase 3: Advocacy Integration (Putting Faith into Action) Organizations align their annual project blueprints with concrete community issues, applying their localized skills directly to real-world challenges.
  4. Phase 4: Synthesis & Commissioning (Year-End Review) A final gathering to evaluate project outcomes, share systemic insights, and pass the torch to the incoming cohort of Blue Knight leaders.

Who Attends?

The summit hosts delegates representing the core of the university’s student governance network, including:

  • Elected SAMAHAN Central Board Officers
  • Council of Class Presidents (CCP) representatives
  • Council of Organizations of the Ateneo (COA-D) executives
  • Emerging leaders nominated by the Office of Student Affairs
