Davao City, Philippines – Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) hosted the Association of Jesuit Religious Studies and Theology Departments (AJRSTD) National Conference 2025 from May 28 to 31, gathering Theology and Religious Studies faculty from Jesuit universities nationwide. The conference theme, “Forming Pilgrims of Hope: The Future of Teaching Theology in the Context of a VUCA World,” framed rich discussions on renewing theological education in today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world.
The event began with a Holy Mass presided over by Fr. Antonio Basilio, SJ, AdDU Vice President for Higher Education, followed by a welcome dinner that fostered fellowship among participants.

On the first full day, Fr. Karel S. San Juan, SJ, AdDU President and CEAP President, delivered the keynote address highlighting the urgent need for theology to remain relevant and responsive in higher education. His message sparked dynamic group reflections and plenary sharing, engaging attendees in conversations about nurturing hopeful and mission-driven students.
Day two featured multiple research presentations from AJRSTD members, promoting scholarly exchange and dialogue. Participants also visited the AdDU Senior High School Bangkal Campus and the National Museum of Davao, enriching their understanding of the local integration of faith, culture, and education.
On the final day, representatives from Ateneo de Davao, Ateneo de Manila, Ateneo de Naga, Xavier University, and Ateneo de Zamboanga shared best practices and addressed common concerns in theological instruction. The conference wrapped up with the drafting of resolutions, the presentation of new officers, and a symbolic turnover of leadership. Dr. Roawie L. Quimba, AJRSTD President and Chair of AdDU’s Theology Department, delivered the closing remarks, inspiring the community to continue forming “persons for others” grounded in faith and justice.
