College Grading System
Quality Point Index (QPI) System
The formula for the computation of the QPI is =
(quality point equivalent of each course x no. of units of each course)
The QPI is rounded off to two decimal places.
The QPI includes all academic courses enrolled by the student for credit, even if not required by the student's program. FYDP and NSTP grades are not counted in the QPI.
Retention, Dismissal, Re-admission and Graduation
The evaluation of students will be done on a yearly basis. The computation of the QPI shall include all enrolled academic courses during summer (if taken before the 1st semester), 1st semester and 2nd semester. A course failed the first time enrolled and passed the second time enrolled within the same year are both counted in the computation of the QPI. Courses taken during summer are counted with the QPI of the succeeding year.
First Year evaluation Annual QPI is based on 1st and 2nd Semesters grades.
Second Year, Third Year, Fourth and Fifth Year student evaluation Annual QPI is based on summer (if any), 1st and 2nd Semester grades.
Students who have not met the QPI requirement may be dismissed from the University or placed on Probation. They can avail of probation status only once. The probation period is one semester only. At the end of their one-semester probation period, they will be evaluated for retention or dismissal.
First year students with annual QPI of 1.40 to 1.59, second year students with annual QPI of 1.60 to 1.79, and third year, fourth year and fifth year students with annual QPI of 1.80 to 1.99 may request the Standards Committee to place them on probation.
Students on Probation who fail to meet the QPI requirement again whether during the semester of probation or the following years of stay in the University--will be dismissed automatically from the University.
FYDP and NSTP grades are not counted in the QPI. But, students who get an F or an FD in FYDP will be dismissed from the University. Appeals for reconsideration may be submitted to the FYDP Follow-up Committee.
For students to graduate from the University, an annual QPI of 2.0 during their senior year/ final year or a cumulative QPI of 2.0 for the entire stay at the University must be earned. Students who have not met this QPI requirement will not be issued a diploma.
Students who have been dismissed from the University due to failure to meet the required QPI may be re-admitted to the University provided they have acquired satisfactory grades in two semesters of full time study of at least 15 units each semester elsewhere. Re-admission is at the discretion of the Admission Committee. If students fail to meet the required QPI after re-admission, they will be dismissed from the University (as given in 7.3, they can avail of probation status only once).
