Rev. Antonio S. Samson S.J., began his tenure as the second president of the Ateneo de Davao University in 1986-1993, then in December 2004.
Father Samson was born in Manila in 1 November 1938. He entered the Society of Jesus in 30 May 1958 and is a graduate of Brandeis University, Waltham, MA, USA, Berchman College and Ateneo de Manila University. His doctorate is in Chemistry and his particular expertise focuses on coconut protein chemistry. Prior to his appointment at Ateneo de Davao University, Father Samson served as executive vice president at Ateneo de Manila University. As vice president, he was responsible for oversight of student life, intercollegiate faculty development, as well as academic affairs. Early in his career, Father Samson was an instructor at Ateneo de Manila University, and a prefect of the University Residence Halls. He currently serves as a trustee at Xavier University (Cagayan de Oro City), Ateneo de Zamboanga University (Zamboanga City), Sacred Heart School (Cebu City), Ateneo de Naga University (Naga City), Philippine Institute of Pure and Applied Chemistry (PIPAC), Federation of Accrediting Associations of the Philippines (FAAP). He is also a chairman of the Board of El Observatorio de Manila, Sta. Maria Catholic School - Ateneo de Iloilo (Iloilo City) and Chair and Trustee of Private Education Retirement Annuity Association (PERAA). He also serves as President of Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU), and Chair of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on Accreditation of the Commission on Higher Education. He was a trustee of Ateneo de Manila University (1978-1986, 1990-1996), Davao Medical School Foundation (1986-1993), Xavier Science Foundation (1993-2005), Xavier School (1997-2003) and Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (1993-2005). Throughout his career, Father Samson has demonstrated a commitment to “whole person education,” a traditional hallmark of Jesuit education.
